Sheriff's Budget Crisis
Many of you are asking how the Rancho Cordova Police Department is affected by the extreme budget crisis the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is facing. Since the Rancho Cordova Police Department contracts with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement services and personnel, the changes in the Sheriff's Department do affect us. Here is a brief explanation: The large number of deputies who are facing layoff are low-seniority deputies mostly assigned to the jails. Since State law mandates specific custody programs and policies, the Sheriff is required to maintain staffing levels in the jails to ensure these State mandates are met. When the layoffs occur, vacancies are created in the jails. The vacated positions in the jails will be filled by deputies who have low seniority and are currently working in patrol. Low-seniority patrol officers, some of which who are assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department will be reassigned to the jails. Unincorporated patrol areas in the county will be staffed, at reduced levels, by the remaining senior patrol officers and detectives from units that have been reduced in size. How does this affect RCPD? The contract between the Sheriff’s Department and the City of Rancho Cordova requires specific staffing levels. We will maintain our existing staffing levels. In fact, we will still have our own Detectives, Problem Oriented Police officers, and Traffic Unit. Our personnel faces may change, but our commitment to delivering high-quality service remains my top priority. Sincerely, |
