Stolen Vehicle Information

Coming out of your home and not finding your vehicle in the driveway can be a traumatic moment.  Wandering the mall parking lot even though you're sure you parked, "right over there" can be a scary time.

Over 1 million vehicles a year are stolen.  There are some easy tips to make your car less of a target:

• Lock your car and take your keys.
• Roll up your windows all the way and make sure your trunk is closed completely.
• Don't put your vehicle plate information on your keys.  They could provide a thief with the information needed to find your car.
• Keep your car's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and license plate in a safe place at home.  If your car is stolen, you will be able to report it in a timely manner.
• If you are using a valet or any other service where you must leave a key, leave only the ignition key and carry the registration with you.  If you leave your house keys and the address of your home on the registration, you have put yourself into the position of becoming a home burglary victim as well.

If your vehicle is stolen: call our non-emergency dispatch number (916) 362-5115.  An officer will be dispatched to take a report.

 When your vehicle is found, you will be notified by the agency that finds it.  Please do not call and ask about the status of your car.  We do not give out stolen vehicle information over the phone.  If you are listed as a registered owner of the vehicle, you may come into our station, present a valid driver's license and we will check the status for you.
