Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting
A man was shot and killed earlier today after becoming involved in a fight with police officers during a call for service. The victim, a man in his mid-30s, sustained at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene, a single-family residence in the 3400 block of Nut Plains Drive.
The incident began when Rancho Cordova police officers responded to a call shortly before 5:00 p.m. about a man acting bizarre and exhibiting erratic behavior toward other family members inside the home. The caller, a relative of the man, stated that family members wanted the man to leave the residence, but he had refused to do so.
Two patrol officers arrived at the location and began an investigation. They were directed to a bedroom of the home, where they spoke with the man in question. During the contact, the occupant repeatedly made incoherent remarks and displayed unorthodox behavior toward the officers. Ultimately, the officers decided that the man needed to be removed from the home so that further evaluation could be conducted.
As the officers attempted to detain the man, he became resistive and combative toward them. One of them deployed a Taser device at the subject, in an effort to gain compliance. Deployment of the Taser was unsuccessful, and the man then began to physically fight the officers. During the altercation, both officers were struck several times by the man, whose large stature and inordinate strength began to overpower the officers.
Fearing for his safety and that of his partner, one of the officers drew his service weapon and shot the occupant, ending the altercation. The officers immediately called for medical assistance and attempted to render aid to the victim. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the residence and, despite lifesaving efforts, the victim died as a result of his injuries.
Several family members of the victim were inside the residence at the time of the incident. None, however, were directly involved in the altercation, nor were any of them injured. Both officers sustained minor to moderate injuries as a result of being struck by the victim prior to him being shot.
This incident will be investigated by the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, as is standard practice with any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction. The officer involved in the shooting is assigned to patrol services with the contract city of Rancho Cordova’s police department, and is a 13-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department. In accordance with Sheriff’s Department policy and procedures, he will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The name of the victim in this case will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, after notification has been made to his next of kin.
