Bicyclist Critically injured in Accident

A teenage bicyclist was severely injured this evening after being struck by a motorist near the light rail station at Folsom Boulevard and Mather Field Road. The seventeen year-old victim was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. His identity is not being disclosed at this time.

Shortly before 8:45 p.m., Rancho Cordova police officers responded to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist. Investigation revealed that a man driving eastbound Folsom Boulevard, approaching Mather Field Road, struck the teenage victim as he rode his bicycle from the sidewalk onto the roadway and into the eastbound lanes of Folsom Boulevard. The bicyclist was struck and then dragged underneath the vehicle at least fifty feet before it came to a stop.

Preliminary indications are that the driver of the vehicle was obeying all traffic laws, and was proceeding through the crosswalk at the location with a green traffic signal in his direction. In addition, neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be a contributing factor to this tragic accident.

Anyone having information regarding this incident may contact the Rancho Cordova Police Department’s Traffic Unit at (916) 876-6675.
