On December 28, 2018, at 11:17 a.m., the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department received information regarding a possible shooting, which reportedly occurred on eastbound U.S. Highway 50 near the Mather Field Road exit.
Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel located a single female who had sustained at least one gunshot wound to her upper body. Preliminary information leads investigators to believe the female and another occupant in her vehicle were traveling on eastbound U.S. Highway 50 as the suspect vehicle drove alongside them and discharged a firearm. The shooting caused the male driver to lose control of the vehicle and collide with the center median.
The victims’ injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. Detectives are currently on the scene investigating.
At the onset of this incident, the highway was shut down for just over two hours and traffic was diverted. The roadway has since re-opened.
The Sheriff’s Department believes this was not a random act, and the occupants of the vehicle were targeted however the motive for the shooting is still unclear.
The Sheriff’s Department is working in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol regarding this incident, and as per standard policy between our two organizations, the Sheriff’s Department will be leading the shooting investigation.
