On January 8, 2019, at 9:02 A.M., the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department received a call regarding a shooting in the 7800 block of Orchard Woods Circle in south Sacramento. As Deputies responded, it was reported there was one female who had been shot. Witnesses reported the suspect was armed with a handgun as he fled on foot through the neighborhood.
Upon arrival to the scene, deputies located a female with at least one gunshot wound to her upper body. Deputies administered first aid and while speaking with her, she lost consciousness and deputies began CPR. The female victim was transported to an area hospital by the Sacramento Metro Fire Department where she was later pronounced deceased.
Sheriff’s Department personnel, assisted by our other law enforcement partners from neighboring jurisdictions, responded and established a perimeter in an effort to contain the suspect and maximize law enforcement presence in the densely populated residential area. As part of this response, and in an effort to maximize community safety, officer safety, and safety of the suspect, the Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) responded to the scene. A methodical search was conducted and additional information was gathered pertaining to the investigation.
At approximately 12:30 P.M., the law enforcement perimeter was broken down and the suspect was not located. Homicide Detectives are continuing to investigate this case and find the person responsible for this tragic and senseless act of violence in our community.
At this point in the investigation, the Sheriff’s Department does not believe this act of violence was random, but it appears this victim was targeted for unknown reasons. The relationship between the suspect and victim in this investigation is not yet clear, however, it is believed the two knew each other.
The identity of the victim, in this case, will be made available by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office after notification has been made to her next of kin.
Detectives are asking anyone with information relating to this incident, to please contact the Sheriff’s Department at (916) 874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP. Tip information may also be left anonymously at www.sacsheriff.com or by calling (916) 874-TIPS (8477).
