Sheriff’s E-Filing for Civil Process

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is excited to announce that it is the first agency in California to offer e-filing services for the Sheriff’s Department’s Civil Bureau. The Sheriff’s Civil Bureau is the Ministerial Officer of the court and is responsible for serving and enforcing court process and court orders.

The Sheriff provides a cost-effective, reliable service, and successfully serves most defendants. However, as the case is civil in nature and the Sheriff cannot utilize criminal investigative tactics such as stakeouts or computer inquiries (DMV, arrest records, etc.) to serve process, therefore we cannot guarantee service. The Civil Process includes summons and complaints, small claims documents for a civil lawsuit, restraining orders, bench warrants, evictions, and any other notice or order from the courts. We also levy on wages, bank accounts, vehicles or any asset of the judgment debtor.

This new feature allows citizens and law firms to file their court process requests from the comfort of their homes and offices. This process eliminates the need to drive to the courthouse, wait in any lines, or make multiple document copies which saves our community time and money. Instead, you can scan in your documents and add them to your online file via the e-filing system.
