The City of Rancho Cordova/Rancho Cordova Police Department has a network of Flock cameras that feed data to the city’s Real Time Information Center, helping officers prevent and fight crime in real-time.

There’s been misinformation about what Flock is and isn’t. We understand the public’s concern about privacy and want to assure them of key facts:

  1. How technology is deployed matters. Clear policies, retention limits, and responsible use are not just best practices for RCPD — they are central to how the city uses Flock Camera data.
  2. How technology is used matters. Here are the facts of what Flock is and isn’t:
    • Cameras detect license plates and vehicles. Cameras do NOT detect faces, people, gender or race. Data is used to solve crimes and prevent crimes.
    • The data are kept by RCPD for 1 year and never sold to 3rd parties.
    • Data are prohibited from being shared for immigration enforcement, traffic enforcement, harassment or intimidation, usage based solely on a protected class (i.e. race, sex, religion), as well as personal use.
    • The data from Flock cameras is being used to fight crime. It is a technology tool, one of many tools law enforcement uses to keep the community safe.
